To ensure the safety of tourists, Jammu and Kashmir administration made ‘lifesaving jackets’ mandatory for Shikara boats in Dal and Nigeen lakes besides other waterbodies of Kashmir. Thousands of tourists who visit Kashmir from different parts of the world, prefer Dal and Nigeen lakes for Shikara rides. But for the last couple of weeks, harsh weather conditions at world famous Dal Lake prompted authorities to take adequate steps for safety. According to Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Policy guidelines, each Shikara boats which was registered under J&K Tourist Trade Act 1978, shall maintain the availability of a minimum of three lifesaving jackets of recommended quality and specifications in the boat at all times. If the rule will be failed, then Shikara boat’s registration shall be cancelled.
