New Delhi: Philemon Yang, President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), will arrive in India on Tuesday evening for a five-day visit from February 4 to February 8, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced.
During his visit, Yang is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss key global and regional issues. He will also attend a program in Bengaluru, Karnataka as part of his engagements in India.
Elected as the President of the 79th session of the UNGA in June 2024, Yang has been a strong advocate for international cooperation. His tenure runs from September 2024 to September 2025. Ahead of his visit, he commended India for its commitment to the United Nations, particularly highlighting New Delhi’s timely financial contributions.
India recently paid $37.64 million to the United Nations Regular Budget for 2025, making it one of 35 member states to fulfill its financial obligations in full and on time.
Yang, a seasoned diplomat and former Prime Minister of Cameroon (2009–2019), has vast experience in international affairs. He has previously served as Cameroon’s High Commissioner to Canada and led high-level delegations to economic summits in Washington, DC, London, and New Delhi.
His visit is expected to strengthen India’s engagement with the UN and enhance diplomatic cooperation on global issues.
