New Delhi | July 17, 2025 — The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting the family of Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse facing the death penalty in Yemen. Describing the case as “sensitive,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian government has been offering all possible assistance, including legal aid, consular support, and diplomatic outreach.
Speaking at a media briefing in New Delhi, Jaiswal said India has appointed a lawyer to help the family navigate the legal process and continues to engage with local authorities in Yemen. He revealed that the scheduled execution of Priya on July 16 was postponed, following India’s efforts to secure more time for a mutually agreeable resolution between the family and the aggrieved party.
“We remain in close contact with the family and are actively working with Yemeni authorities, including through friendly governments,” Jaiswal said.
The case of Nimisha Priya, who hails from Kerala, has garnered widespread public and media attention. She was convicted in Yemen in connection with the death of a Yemeni national in 2017 and sentenced to capital punishment. In recent weeks, her family and rights groups have called on the Indian government to intervene diplomatically to save her life.
Ongoing Diplomatic Engagement
Jaiswal clarified that the Indian government is not only maintaining regular consular visits, but also exerting diplomatic pressure through back-channel negotiations and engagement with third-party countries that maintain stronger relations with Yemen.
“We are in touch with some friendly governments who have influence in the region to support our efforts,” he added.
The MEA spokesperson did not reveal further details, citing the sensitivity of the matter and the ongoing nature of the negotiations.
