Fresh NOTAM reflects heightened security measures amid border tensions
In a move underscoring ongoing geopolitical tensions, India has extended its ban on Pakistani aircraft using Indian airspace until August 23, 2025. The decision, announced on Tuesday, comes amid a series of escalating military and diplomatic standoffs between the two neighbouring countries.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol confirmed the extension via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) restricting Pakistani aircraft from entering Indian airspace has been officially extended until 23rd August 2025.”
The minister noted that the extension was issued in line with current national security protocols and strategic considerations.
This development follows Pakistan’s recent decision to prolong its own airspace restrictions on Indian carriers until August 24. According to the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), Islamabad’s ban will remain in effect until 5:19 a.m. IST on that day.
Adding to the heightened alertness, Indian defence forces have also issued a NOTAM for a major Indian Air Force (IAF) exercise scheduled from July 23 to 25 along the western border. The aerial drills will span across key sectors in Rajasthan, particularly between Barmer and Jodhpur — a region close to the Pakistan border.
A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) is typically issued when a specific airspace needs to be cleared of civilian aircraft to accommodate military operations or address safety concerns. Such measures were previously observed during heightened border tensions to prevent civilian casualties and unintended aerial conflict.
This latest restriction comes in the backdrop of ‘Operation Sindoor’, launched by India on May 7 in response to a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. The assault, carried out by Pakistan-backed militants, resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians and sparked nationwide outrage.
Analysts say the continued imposition of NOTAMs by both countries indicates a prolonged period of caution and military readiness on both sides.
