Pana Sankranti, also known as Odia New Year or Maha Vishuba Sankranti, is a vibrant and spiritually significant festival celebrated across Odisha and by Odia communities worldwide. In 2025, Pana Sankranti falls on April 14, marking the solar transition into the Mesha Rashi (Aries), as per the Odia calendar.

Significance of Pana Sankranti

Pana Sankranti symbolizes the beginning of a new year and a new harvest season. It is deeply rooted in agrarian traditions and spiritual renewal. The word “Pana” refers to a special sweet drink made with jaggery, water, and fruits—offered to deities and consumed to cool the body during the scorching summer heat.

This day also honors Lord Hanuman, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Durga. Devotees visit temples and perform pujas to seek blessings for health, prosperity, and peace.

Popular Rituals and Traditions

  • Offering Pana: Clay pots filled with pana (sweet drink) are hung with a small hole at the bottom, letting water drip slowly—a symbolic gesture to cool down Mother Earth.
  • Charitable Acts: Giving away buttermilk, water pots, and food to the needy is a key part of the tradition, promoting compassion and sharing.
  • Meru Yatra & Jhamu Yatra: Major temples like Tara Tarini and others in Odisha organize grand processions and spiritual gatherings.

Why Pana Sankranti Matters Today

In a world facing climate change and water scarcity, Pana Sankranti’s message of sustainability, sharing resources, and respecting nature feels more relevant than ever.
