New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic encounter, the Prime Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, H.E. Brigadier (Retd.) Mark Phillips, paid a visit to the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. This meeting underscores the efforts of both nations to fortify their longstanding ties and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation.

Upon extending a warm welcome to Prime Minister Phillips and his accompanying delegation, President Murmu highlighted the historical connections and shared cultural heritage between India and Guyana. Despite the geographical distance, the President emphasized the deep-rooted bond stemming from a common colonial past and the presence of a vibrant Indian diaspora in Guyana for nearly two centuries.

President Murmu stressed the importance of diversifying the bilateral trade portfolio between the two countries and identified key sectors such as Ayurveda, bio-fuels, and agriculture, particularly in millets, as areas ripe for collaboration. She underscored the potential for joint efforts in addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change and food insecurity through mutually beneficial initiatives in these sectors.

Commending Guyana’s recent assumption of the rotating Presidency of CARICOM and its current leadership role in the United Nations Security Council for the month, President Murmu expressed her congratulations. She highlighted the shared commitment of both nations to advocating for reformed multilateralism, given their status as prominent members of the Global South.

Furthermore, President Murmu lauded Guyana’s proactive stance and leadership in championing environmental sustainability, green energy, and sustainable development initiatives. This recognition underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in combating climate change and promoting responsible environmental stewardship on a global scale.

The meeting between Prime Minister Phillips and President Murmu signifies a reaffirmation of the strong bilateral relations between India and Guyana, as well as a commitment to fostering deeper cooperation across various spheres for the mutual benefit of both nations and the broader international community.
