Kerala reports 1,968 fresh Covid-19 cases on Thursday; 1,737 through contact


Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala on Thursday, reported 1,968 Covid-19 cases, informed the office of Health Minister K K Shailaja. This is the second day the daily cases marked near 2,000. The most number of cases were reported from Thiruvananthapuram and Malappuram. 9 deaths were also confirmed in the state taking Covid death toll to 191.null

The National Institute of Virology in Alappuzha on Thursday confirmed 9 more deaths due to Covid-19. Thiruvananthapuram Vellumannadi native Basheer (44), medical college Navarangam lane native Rajan (84), Kavadiyar native Krishnankutty Nair (73), Vallakkadavu native Lawrence (69) who died on August 14, Kozhikode Vadakara native Mohanan (68) and Thiruvananthapuram Vettoor native Mahad (48) who died on August 15, Neyyattinkara native Mohanakumaran Nair (58), Puthukurichi native Mershli (75), Poojappura native Manikandan (72) who died on August 16 were confirmed due to Covid-19.

Out of the new cases, 1,737 cases were reported through contact while 71 persons who tested positive for Covid-19 had returned from abroad and 109 returned from other states. Out of the contact cases, the infection source of 100 cases is unknown.

The district-wise statistics of positive cases are: Thiruvananthapuram – 429 (394 through contact), Kollam – 86 (79 through contact), Pathanamthitta – 119 (95 through contact), Alappuzha – 198 (182 contact cases), Kottayam – 124 (115), Idukki – 35 (29), Ernakulam – 150 (138), Thrissur – 72 (67), Palakkad – 65 (34), Malappuram – 356 (328), Kozhikode – 130 (108), Wayanad – 35 (23), Kannur – 78 (66) and Kasaragod – 91 (79).

In an alarming situation, 48 health workers also tested positive for Covid-19.

Among them 21 are from Thiruvananthapuram, 9 from Malappuram, 4 each from Ernakulam and Kozhikode, 3 from Kasaragod, 2 each from Kollam, Thrissur and Kannur and 1 from Palakkad. 3 INHS employees in Ernakulam district were also confirmed of Covid-19 on Thursday.

1,217 recoveries were also reported on Thursday.

37,010 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. So far, 13,12,992 samples were sent for testing. 1,55,984 samples were collected from priority groups as part of sentinel surveillance.

31 new Covid hotspots were identified in the state on Thursday while 18 regions were dropped from the list. There are a total of 585 hotspots in the state.
