Manipur was rocked by two back-to-back earthquakes early Wednesday morning, triggering panic among residents who rushed out of their homes in fear. Fortunately, no casualties or property damage have been reported so far, but the repeated tremors have heightened anxiety across the region.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the first quake struck at 1:54 AM in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, registering a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located at a depth of 40 kilometers. Roughly half an hour later, at 2:26 AM, a second tremor measuring 2.5 magnitude was recorded in Noney district, with its epicenter at a depth of 25 kilometers.
Ongoing Seismic Activity Raises Concern
This is not the first time the region has experienced tremors this month. On May 8, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake had struck Manipur’s Chandel district. While none of these incidents have resulted in major losses, the increasing frequency of quakes has left residents deeply concerned.
Local residents reported feeling the jolts and said they ran outside with their families in the middle of the night, fearing stronger aftershocks. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and emergency response teams remain on alert to handle any potential crisis.
